Schodack lies on the east side of the Hudson River, between Albany and the Berkshires (maps). It is, as a town slogan puts it, "...a good place to live." It's also a part of of New York's Capital Region that makes new residents, business and industry welcome. Schodack has a population of just over 12,500. Many residents work in Albany, which is only a 20-minute trip by auto or bus. The village of Castleton-on-Hudson, with a population of approximately 1,600, is the only incorporated municipality wholly within Schodack. A small western portion of the Village of Nassau on our eastern border also falls within the town. The Castleton Post Office serves much of Schodack; there is also service from post offices located in the hamlets of East Schodack and Schodack Landing, and from Nassau, East Greenbush.
Schodack's water sources are protected by a "Water Quality Act". The aquifer map plate1.pdf (457KB) and the zoning document docs/plate2.pdf (799KB) are also available here. |

Schodack strongly encourages residential recycling, accepting most recyclables from homes WITHOUT charge at the town transfer station and recycling facility on Poyneer Road, while imposing a (modest) fee for disposal of non-recyclables.
Commuter buses (and see, especially, Schodack-Albany schedule) serve the Routes 9 & 20 corridor. A state-of-the-art commuter parking lot for bus riders is located on Route 150 and the interersection of 150 with 9 & 20. Major and commuter airlines provide convenient nationwide and international connections from Albany International Airport. The Capital Region is a major junction for passenger rail service by Amtrak to and from New York City & Washington D.C., Chicago, Boston and Montreal. Electric power and natural gas are provided by Niagara Mohawk. Schodack, including the Village of Castleton, is within the local telephone calling area for Albany. Taconic Telephone and Verizon provide telephone service. Taconic's territory generally includes the part of town east of Route 9. Bell Atlantic's includes Castleton and other westerly parts of Schodack. Cable television service is available in most areas. Schodack is favorably situated for firms requiring satellite uplink-downlink capability.
