Schodack Adopts Cold War Veterans Exemption

Schodack Supervisor Beth Secor notes that the Town Board has adopted a local law granting "Cold War Veterans a Limited Town Tax Exemption."

Secor stated, "The local law will allow Town residents who served in our nation's armed forces between September 2nd 1945 and December 26th 1991, or their surviving spouses, to receive a 10-percent reduction in the assessed value of their home up to an $8,000 total reduction in assessed value. As required under the state law creating the exemption, local approval is necessary in order for veterans to be eligible for the exemption."

Qualifying veterans must apply through their local assessor's office to receive the benefit and must apply by March 1, 2009 in order for the exemption to effect their 2010 assessment. The local law allowing the Cold War Veterans Exemption was adopted at the November 13, 2008 meeting.

"This law is a way for the Town of Schodack to thank those brave men and women who served during the Cold War and helped end the threat of communism. Their service protected our country during a time of conflict and uncertainty," continued Secor.

Schodack Assessor, Sharon Martin, may be reached daily between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Schodack Town Hall located at 265 Schuurman Road or by telephone at 477-7932.
